Will Lifting Heavy Cause Inflammation in Older People?

Lifting heavy weights CAN cause inflammation in middle-aged people, but it is not a guarantee. Inflammatory responses are a natural part of the body’s healing process after exercise, and can be beneficial for muscle growth.

However, if you are lifting weights that are too heavy or if you are not used to lifting weights, you may have more inflammation than necessary.

Tips to reduce inflammation from lifting heavy weights:

>>Start with lighter weights and gradually increase the weight as you get stronger.

>>Warm up before lifting weights and cool down afterwards.

>>Drink plenty of fluids before, during, and after your workout.

>>Eat a healthy diet that includes plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

>>Get enough sleep.

>>Interval training has been shown to reduce inflammation more than steady-state cardio.

>>Your age can play a role, obviously. As you get older, your body has a harder time repairing muscle damage, which can lead to more inflammation.

>>If you have any underlying health conditions, such as arthritis or heart disease, you may be more prone to inflammation.

DO YOU STRUGGLE WITH INFLAMMATION? Do you have to be careful lifting weights?

As I’ve gotten older, I DO watch how heavy I lift. My knees, wrists and lower back are areas I have problems with inflammation and pain.
