Health and Wellness Coaching
What is health and wellness/fitness coaching? Some also call this lifestyle wellness coaching. It’s a specialized area within the coaching field whereby the coach works with clients to help them attain their goals pertaining to health, wellness and/or fitness.
The International Coach Federation (ICF) definition: “Coaching is partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.”
People contact a coach because they need help reaching certain goals. Many people are stuck in the same patterns of behavior and feel confused and lost on how to move forward or what to do next. Some find that their normal strategies and methods that they’ve used in the past to achieve a goal are not working. Many people have strong self-limiting beliefs which block them from reaching a more desirable way of living (losing weight, exercising, eating healthy) and a coach can help them move beyond the doubt.
People looking for a coach normally have a goal, an objective, in mind. They normally know the direction they want to go and what they desire for the final outcome… they just are having a darned difficult time getting to that desired outcome. Behaviors need to change. They need to engage in effective actions.
The client has intentions which are turned into actions and finally become sustainable, lifelong changes. A coach will not TELL the client what to do, but will work together with the client to flesh out their goals and create full-fledged action plans for the client’s health, wellness or fitness problem, helping them choose the proper fitness and nutrition program that best suits the client’s goals.
Coaches are an accountability partner – expecting the clients to work on their new action plans/programs – and to report back with any successes and “hiccups” that the client is dealing with.
